Origin: A borrowing from Dutch. Etymons: Dutch mudseken, mutsken.
Etymology: < early modern Dutch mudseken, apparently a variant of mutsken (Dutch mutsje ) < mutse , name of a unit of measure (of uncertain etymology; perhaps a specific use of mutse mutch n.) + -ken -kin suffix.
Scottish and English regional (northern).
A measure of capacity for liquids and for dry substances of a powdery or granular nature, such as salt, equal to a quarter of a Scottish pint or roughly three quarters of an imperial pint (0.43 litres); a vessel containing this amount. Occasionally: an imperial pint, esp. as a measure for spirits. Also figurative: a small amount. Ling. Atlas Scotl. (1975) I. 196 records the sense ‘a quarter of a peck’ from Caithness, Lanarkshire, and Dumfriesshire.
