Etymology: In sense A. 1 < the name of the Namib Desert on the west coast of southern Africa (now the coast of Namibia) + -ian suffix; in other senses < the name of Namibia + -an suffix.The Republic of Namibia is a country on the coast of south-west Africa between South Africa and Angola. It was given this name by the United Nations in 1968, in anticipation of its being released from the administrative mandate granted to South Africa by the League of Nations in 1919. Namib is the generic Khoekhoe word for ‘desert’.
