Etymology: < the name of Nancy Dawson (1730–67), English theatrical dancer.Nancy Dawson danced the hornpipe in the place of an indisposed male dancer during a performance of the Beggar's Opera in October 1759. The tune to which she danced was subsequently named after her and has since become popular as the setting for various lyrics, including ‘Nuts in May’ and ‘Here we go round the Mulberry Bush’. With the development of sense 2 compare nan n.1, molly n.1, and also the following:1889 Ballad: Nancy Dawson in A. Barrère & C. G. Leland Dict. Slang II. 78/1 I'll tell you of a fellow who's a very heavy swell, Who fancies he's the idol of each fashionable belle, And they call him Nancy Dawson, And isn't he a caution!
