单词 nandina
释义

Nandinan.

Brit. /nanˈdiːnə/, /nanˈdʌɪnə/, U.S. /nænˈdinə/
Inflections: Plural Nandinas, unchanged.
Forms: also with lower-case initial.
Origin: A borrowing from Latin. Etymon: Latin Nandina.
Etymology: < scientific Latin Nandina, genus name (C. P. Thunberg Nova Genera Plantarum (1781) i. 14) < Japanese †nandin (1712 in E. Kæmpfer Amœnitatum Exoticarum), variant of nanten (see nanten n.) + -a suffix1; compare -ina suffix. The sequence -di- is not usual in Japanese; Kæmpfer perhaps heard a Japanese form *nanden containing a raised /e/ which he transcribed with i . Kæmpfer's etymon is cited by Thunberg and some later botanical writers (see, e.g., quot. 1852) and may partly be the basis for the English form nandin n.
A monotypic genus of shrubs of the family Berberidaceae, characterized by bipinnate leaves, panicles of small white flowers, and red or purple berries; (also nandina) the shrub belonging to this genus, Nandina domestica, native to eastern Asia from India to Japan and cultivated elsewhere for its ornamental bamboo-like foliage (also called celestial bamboo, heavenly bamboo, sacred bamboo).
