Etymology: < Middle French naffrage (early 15th cent.), naufraige (mid 15th cent.), Middle French, French naufrage (mid 16th cent.) < classical Latin naufragium shipwreck, ruin, disaster < naufragus shipwrecked, shipwrecking, variant of nāvifragus shipwrecking ( < nāvis ship (see nave n.2) + frag- : see fragile adj.) + -ium -y suffix4.
1. Chiefly literary. Ruin; destruction; misadventure. Cf. naufragie n. Obsolete.
