释义

nauscopyn.

Obsolete. rare.
A supposed method for perceiving ships or land beyond the horizon, claimed to have been invented by M. Bottineau in 1784.In Bottineau's account, the approach of a ship towards land causes a meteor to appear in the sky, which may be observed over the horizon. Bottineau offers no explanation for this: ‘It is sufficient for me to have discovered the fact, without being obliged to account for its principle’ ( Encycl. Brit. (1797) XII. 776/2).
