Origin: Formed within English, by compounding. Etymons: neuraminic adj., hyaluronidase n.
Etymology: < neuramin- (in neuraminic adj.) + -idase (probably in hyaluronidase n.).
Biochemistry.
Any of various enzymes that catalyse the cleavage of neuraminic acid residues from mucoproteins and glycolipids; esp. any of those present as surface proteins of influenza viruses. Also called sialidase.
