Etymology: < scientific Latin nannandrium (J. B. De-Toni Sylloge Algarum (1889) I. 16) < ancient Greek νάννος , variant of νᾶνος dwarf (see nano- comb. form) + scientific Latin -andrium ( < ancient Greek ἀνδρ- , ἀνήρ man (see andro- comb. form) + classical Latin -ium : see -y suffix⁴). Compare earlier nannandrous adj.Scientific Latin nannandrium was probably formed as an alteration of the earlier post-classical Latin noun nannandres (plural; V. B. Wittrock 1875, in Prodromus Monographiae Oedogoniearum 2 (in Nova Acta Regiae Societatis Scientiarum Upsaliensis 9)).
