Origin: Of uncertain origin. Perhaps a borrowing from Dharuk. Etymon: Dharuk marrinagul.
Etymology: Origin uncertain. Perhaps < Dharuk (Sydney region) marrinagul small flat-head fish.A similar Aboriginal form is conjectured in R. M. W. Dixon et al. Austral. Aboriginal Words in Eng. (1990) 100 to have been shortened from *muraŋinagay on the basis of W. Dawes Vocab. Lang. New S. Wales (1790) and the following:1882 J. E. Tenison-Woods Fish & Fisheries New S. Wales 52 The name of Nannygai is said by Mr. Edward Hill to be derived from the aboriginal name of Mura ngin a gai.Compare quot. 1871.
