Etymology: < Nantoco, the name of a town in northern Chile near which the mineral was found + -ite suffix¹, after Spanish nantoquita (don Pedro Sieveking in I. Domeyko Mineralojia de Chili (1867) 51) and German Nantokit (A. Breithaupt 1868, in Berg- u. Hüttermännische Zeitung 27 3).

A rare cubic chloride of copper, CuCl, occurring as white granular masses.
