Origin: Of multiple origins. Partly a borrowing from Spanish. Partly a borrowing from Catalan. Etymons: Spanish naveta; Catalan naveta.
Etymology: < Spanish naveta (1902 in this sense; 1275 in sense ‘incense holder’; c1300 in sense ‘small ship’) and its etymon Catalan naveta (1955, but probably earlier in this sense; c1300 in sense ‘small ship’; 1356 in sense ‘incense container’) < nau ship ( < classical Latin nāvis : see nave n.2) + -eta -et suffix1. Compare navet n.1
Archaeology.
A type of Bronze Age megalithic chambered tomb, shaped like an upturned boat, found on the Balearic Islands of Minorca and Majorca.

2000 Times (Nexis) 15 Nov. The island is peppered with Bronze Age stone circles. There are..burial chambers known as navetas, constructed of dozens of boulders.
