Etymology: Originally < naphtha n. + -ine suffix5, with insertion of euphonic medial -l- ; compare -in suffix1 and French naphtaline (1821). In β. forms remodelled after -ene comb. form; compare French naphtalène (1836).
Chemistry.
A crystalline aromatic compound, C10H8, with a molecule consisting of two fused six-membered rings and a pungent, tar-like smell, which is obtained as a distillation product of coal tar and is used in industrial syntheses, esp. of dyes and resins, and as an insect deterrent in mothballs. Also: a substituted derivative of this.The compound was previously noticed by Garden ( Ann. Philos. (1820) 15 74) and W. T. Brande ( Q. Jrnl. Sci. (1820) 8 287), two papers cited by Kidd (quots. 18211 at α. ).
