Etymology: < naphtha n. + -ene comb. form, after French naphtène (in sense 1, P. J. Pelletier & P. Walter 1840, in Jrnl. de pharmacie 26 561; in sense 2, W. Markovnikov & W. Oglobine 1884, in Ann. de chim. et de physique 2 447).
Chemistry.
1. A substance formerly thought to represent a liquid hydrocarbon contained in naphtha (now regarded as a mixture of hydrocarbons). Obsolete.
