Origin: A borrowing from Spanish. Etymon: Spanish naranjilla.
Etymology: < American Spanish naranjilla (feminine), lit. ‘little orange’ (mid 17th cent.; 1618 in Spanish denoting a kind of decorative bead) < naranja (see orange n.1) + -illa -illa suffix. Compare American Spanish naranjillo (masculine), the name of the plant (1803; also used as the name of the shrub Citronella mucronata, and thus in Cent. Dict. (1909) at narangillo).
A subshrub of the northern Andes, Solanum quitoense (family Solanaceae), which is cultivated in Central and South America and elsewhere for its bright orange-yellow fruit, and whose acid-green flesh is used for juice and for preserves. Also: the fruit of this plant.

1968 J. W. Purseglove Trop. Crops: Dicotyledons II. 556 S. [sc. Solanum] quitoense.., naranjilla, is a native of the northern Andes and is extensively cultivated in Ecuador and Colombia between 3,000–7,000 ft.
1996 Chiltern Seeds Catal. 220 In the Andes it is for these naranjillas that the plant is cultivated.
