Origin: A borrowing from French. Etymon: French narcéine.
Etymology: < French narcéine (J. Pelletier 1832, in Ann. de chim. et de physique 50 252: see below) < ancient Greek νάρκη numbness (see narcosis n.) + French -ine -ine suffix5.French narcéine was earlier used by S. Robinet 1825, in Ann. de chim. et de physique 30 216, reporting its proposal as a preferred name for morphine by F. Chaussier, although the form Chaussier proposed was in fact narcine (F. Chaussier Programme No. 25 des opérations chim. et pharmaceutiques (1819) 6).
Chemistry.
A narcotic tricyclic crystalline alkaloid, C23H27NO8, obtained from opium or narcotine and formerly used as a painkiller.
