Origin: A borrowing from Urdu. Etymon: Urdu naẕr.
Etymology: < Urdu naẕr gift < Persian naẕr undertaking, offering promised or made in consequence of a vow < Arabic naḏr vow, votive offering < naḏara to vow, dedicate, consecrate. Compare nazrana n. N.E.D. (1906) enters this under nuzzer. O.E.D. Suppl. (1976) adds a separate entry under nazar.
In South Asia: a present or tribute given by a social inferior to a superior. In later use also as a mass noun.
