单词 nazarean
释义

Nazareann.adj.

Brit. /ˌnazəˈriːən/, U.S. /ˌnæzəˈriən/
Forms: 1500s 1700s– Nazarean, 1800s Nazaraean, 1900s– Nasorean, 1900s– Nazoraean, 1900s– Nazorean.
Origin: A borrowing from Latin, combined with an English element. Etymons: Latin Nazaraeus , -an suffix.
Etymology: < post-classical Latin Nazaraeus, Nazareus of Nazareth (Vulgate), member of a Jewish or early Christian sect (4th cent. in Jerome; < Hellenistic Greek Ναζωραῖος of Nazareth, early Christian, in Byzantine Greek also member of a Jewish or early Christian sect (late 4th or early 5th cent. in Epiphanius; probably < Aramaic nāṣrāyā , adjective ( > Arabic naṣrānī Nasrani n., via Syriac nāṣrāyā ) < nāṣraṯ Nazareth, name of the town in Galilee which was the home of Jesus) + -an suffix. Compare French Nazaréen (a1622; 1688 in sense ‘member of a Jewish or early Christian sect’; 1704 in sense ‘early Christian’), and earlier Old French, Middle French Nazarien (13th cent.), alteration (with substitution of the suffix -ien -ian suffix) of Old French Nazareus (late 12th cent.). Compare Nazarene adj. and n. (and Middle English form Nazaryen s.v.), Nazarite n. and adj.The forms with medial -o- reflect more exactly the Hellenistic Greek etymon. Some scholars have disputed, on philological and other grounds, an original connection between the Hellenistic Greek word (or its Aramaic etymon) and the name of the home town of Jesus. Hence in some English uses the reference is to a postulated sect of pre-Christian origin (see e.g. quots. 19861 at sense A. and 1986 at sense B. 2). Compare also the note at Nazarene n. 3a.
