Origin: A borrowing from Latin. Etymon: Latin Nazaraeus.
Etymology: < post-classical Latin Nazaraeus, Nazareus (see Nazarean n. and adj. and Nazirite n.). Compare Old French Nazaraeus Nazirite (early 13th cent.).
Obsolete.
1. An Israelite, chiefly during the Temple period, who was consecrated to the service of God, under a vow to abstain from alcohol, let the hair grow, and avoid defilement by contact with corpses, as described in Numbers 6:1–21; an ascetic; = Nazirite n.
