Etymology: < German Neencephalon (L. Edinger Vorlesungen über den Bau der nervösen Zentralorgane des Menschen u. der Tiere (ed. 7, 1908) II. xvi. 242; now Neenzephalon ) < neo- neo- comb. form + Enzephalon encephalon n.In form neoencephalon re-formed after neo- comb. form.
Chiefly Psychology.
The phylogenetically newer part of the vertebrate brain, consisting chiefly of the neocortex or neopallium.
