Etymology: < classical Latin nefandus wicked, impious, abominable ( < ne- not (see ne adv.1) + fandus ‘to be spoken’, gerundive of fārī to speak: see fame n.1) + -ous suffix. Compare earlier nefand adj.
Now archaic and rare.
Not to be spoken of, unmentionable; abominable, atrocious.
