单词 nefarious
释义

nefariousadj.

Brit. /nᵻˈfɛːrɪəs/, U.S. /nəˈfɛriəs/
Origin: A borrowing from Latin, combined with an English element. Etymons: Latin nefārius , -ous suffix.
Etymology: < classical Latin nefārius offending against moral law, wicked ( < nefās offence against divine or moral law, wicked act ( < ne- not (see ne adv.1) + fās that which is right, proper, in accordance with divine or moral law, of uncertain origin) + -ius, suffix forming adjectives) + -ous suffix. Compare Middle French nephaire dreadful, horrible (mid 16th cent.). N.E.D. (1906) gives the pronunciation as (nĭə·riəs) /nɪˈfɛərɪəs/. Pronunciations with /ɑː/ in the second syllable are also occasionally attested in British use from the late 20th cent.
Wicked, iniquitous, villainous, despicable.
