Origin: A borrowing from Latin. Etymon: Latin nefresis.
Etymology: < post-classical Latin nefresis pain in the kidneys, kidney disease (from 10th cent. in British sources) < Byzantine Greek νέϕρησις pain in the kidneys (7th cent.) < ancient Greek νεϕρός kidney (see nephro- comb. form) + -ησις , extended form of -σις -sis suffix. With the β. forms compare -sy suffix1. Compare Middle French néphrésie (mid 16th cent.).
Obsolete. rare.
Pain in the kidney; spec. renal colic.
