Origin: A borrowing from Latin, combined with an English element. Etymons: Latin Necrophaga , -an suffix.
Etymology: < scientific Latin Necrophaga (W. S. Macleay Annulosa Javanica (1825) 37; < Hellenistic Greek νεκροϕάγος : see necrophagous adj.) + -an suffix. Compare earlier necrophagous adj.
Entomology. Obsolete. rare. Apparently only attested in dictionaries or glossaries.
In the terminology of W. S. Macleay: a member of a family comprising all beetles that feed on dead animal matter (most of which are now included in the family Silphidae).
