Origin: Formed within English, by compounding. Etymons: necro- comb. form, -phage comb. form.
Etymology: < necro- comb. form + -phage comb. form, after necrophagous adj. Compare French nécrophage (1802).
Chiefly Zoology.
An organism, esp. an insect, that feeds on dead bodies or tissue. Also in extended use.
