Etymology: < Hindi nasbandī ligature, vasectomy, sterilization < nas vein, sinew ( < Sanskrit snasā tendon, muscle) + bandī binding, tying ( < Persian bandī, ultimately < Sanskrit bandh- to bind, tie, fasten).In form nasbandhi in quot. 2001 after Sanskrit bandh-.

Sterilization of a man or a woman, esp. vasectomy. Also: a population control programme, instituted by the Indian government during the state of emergency in 1977, requiring sterilization for those with more than two children.
