Etymology: < Ndembu Ndembu, self-designation. Compare French Ndembo (1933).Compare:1893 Jrnl. Amer. Geogr. Soc. N.Y. 25 310 Ji-ndembu is the plural of ndembu, which is the title of a chief or king who has other chiefs under him as vassals. This title is used between the Mbengu and Loji rivers. The principal ndembu chiefs are Mbamba-Mbuila, [etc.].
