Etymology: < post-classical Latin ne temere ‘lest rashly’, the opening words of the decree < classical Latin nē (see ne adv.¹) + temere rashly (see temerous adj.).

A papal decree of 1907 clarifying canon law with regard to marriage, which declared that no marriage between two Catholics or a Catholic and a non-Catholic is valid unless solemnized by a Roman Catholic priest.The decree was designed specifically to clarify the contents of the 1563 decree Tametsi.The rulings of Ne Temere, with important modifications, were carried over into the Codex Iuris Canonici (1983), canons 1108–19.
