Origin: Formed within English, by compounding. Etymons: neo- comb. form, anthropic adj.
Etymology: < neo- comb. form + anthropic adj. Compare slightly earlier palaeanthropic adj. Compare also palanthropic adj.Apparently coined by J. W. Dawson in a geological context (see quot. 1894 at sense 1), and later reintroduced by G. E. Smith in its current sense (see quot. 1916 at sense 2).
Physical Anthropology.
1. In the terminology of J. W. Dawson: designating the later of two periods into which the anthropic period was divided. Also as n. with the: the neanthropic period. Obsolete.
