Origin: From a proper name. Etymon: proper name Nichiren.
Etymology: < Nichiren, the name adopted by the Japanese Buddhist monk and prophet, born Yakuō-maru or Zennichi-maru, ordained Zeshōbō Renchō (1222–82), who founded the sect in 1253. The name Nichi-ren literally means ‘Sun Lotus’ in Japanese ( < Middle Chinese). The sect is known in Japanese as Nichiren-shū (1481); this form is also recorded in some English sources.
Buddhism.
A Japanese Buddhist sect which bases its teaching on the Lotus Sutra (Lotus Sutra n. at lotus n. Compounds 2), an ancient Mahayana Buddhist scripture, and which advocates fervent devotion to this text and its symbolism as a means to enlightenment, esp. through ritual invocation of its title (see below); (also occasionally with the and plural agreement) the members of this sect considered collectively. Frequently attributive.The formula of the invocation is Namu Myōhōrengekyō ‘I humbly trust the Lotus of Perfect Law’ (cf. nembutsu n. and adj.).More than forty distinct subsects now exist, the largest of which, Nichiren-Shōshū, has been associated with the international religious and political organization Sōka Gakkai (cf. Soka Gakkai n.).
