Origin: A borrowing from Latin. Etymon: Latin non ens.
Etymology: < post-classical Latin non ens (4th cent.; from 13th cent. in British sources) < classical Latin nōn not (see non- prefix) + ēns (see ens n.).
Now rare.
1. A thing which has no existence. Cf. nonentity n. 1a. Now chiefly Philosophy.

2. Cambridge University slang. A freshman who has not yet matriculated. In early use also: the condition of not having matriculated. Now historical and rare.
