Forms: 1600s nasburies (plural), 1600s nasebury, 1700s nisberry, 1700s– naseberry, 1800s kneesberry, 1800s neesberry, 1800s neeseberry.
Origin: Of multiple origins. Partly a borrowing from Spanish. Partly a borrowing from Portuguese. Etymons: Spanish néspera; Portuguese nêspera.
Etymology: Partly (i) < Spanish néspera medlar (also níspero medlar tree (1570; c1106 in forms nêšporo , nyêšporo ; c1326 in form néspero )), and partly (ii) < Portuguese nêspera (1555 in form nespora ), both < post-classical Latin nespula (see discussion s.v. mespil n.), with the last two syllables remodelled after berry n.1 Compare nispero n., mespil n.In Spanish and Portuguese forms with -r- probably after Spanish pera, Portuguese pera pear n. The variants kneesberry, neesberry, neeseberry, and perhaps nisberry apparently represent a pronunciation with a raised front vowel in the first syllable.
Chiefly Jamaican.
The sapodilla, a tropical American fruit with a sugary brown flesh; (more fully naseberry tree) the sapodilla tree, Manilkara zapota (family Sapotaceae), which bears this fruit, has hard, durable wood, and yields chicle.
