More fully nashi pear. The crisp, juicy, apple-shaped fruit of various cultivars of the oriental pear Pyrus pyrifolia (formerly known as P. serotina) (family Rosaceae), esp. the variety culta, which were developed in Japan and China and later cultivated in New Zealand and elsewhere. Also: the tree itself. Also called Asian pear, Japanese pear. Cf. sand pear n. at sand n.2 Compounds 2c.In quot. 1884 showing the Japanese compound hama-nashi.
