Stress is usually determined by a subsequent element and vowels may be reduced accordingly.
Origin: A borrowing from Latin, combined with an English element. Etymons: Latin nāsus , -o- connective.
Etymology: < classical Latin nāsus nose (see nase n.) + -o- connective.Formations in sense 1 are attested from the late 17th cent.; sense 2 shows an isolated formation. In sense 3, after scientific Latin naso- nose + -o- connective (in e.g. naso-palatinus nasopalatine adj.). English formations are found from the mid 19th cent. (earliest in nasopharyngeal adj.). Compare French naso- (formations in which are found from at least the early 19th cent., e.g. nasologie nasology n., naso-surcilier (1845 or earlier)).
1. Used in phonology in terms denoting nasal sounds, as naso-guttural, naso-spirital, naso-vocal, etc. Obsolete.
