Origin: Formed within English, by compounding. Etymons: nasty adj., -gram comb. form.
Etymology: < nasty adj. + -gram comb. form, after telegram n.
colloquial (originally Military and chiefly U.S.).
Originally: a reprimand; esp. a written notice of a misdemeanour or error. In later use also more generally: a threatening, intimidating, or insulting message, esp. one sent by electronic mail.
