Origin: A borrowing from Latin. Etymon: Latin Natatores.
Etymology: < scientific Latin Natatores (J. K. W. Illiger Prodromus systematis mammalium et avium (1811) 270) < classical Latin natātorēs , plural of natātor swimmer < natāt- , past participial stem of natāre to swim (see natant adj.) + -or -or suffix.
Now historical.
A former order of birds comprising those adapted for swimming, including ducks, geese, swans, pelicans, etc.; (also natatores) birds of this order (collectively or individually).
