Etymology: Partly (in α. forms) < Gujarati bājrī pearl millet (apparently containing the suffix -ī , forming diminutives), and partly (in β. forms) < the related < Hindi bājrā pearl millet, both of uncertain origin, probably ultimately showing a loanword; compare Marathi bājrā pearl millet, bājrī (with diminutive suffix) inferior kind of millet, Panjabi bājrā, bājrī, both denoting pearl millet. Perhaps compare also Sanskrit varaka kind of inferior grain ( < a Dravidian language; compare e.g. Tamil varaku, Telugu bagara, both denoting kinds of inferior millet). N.E.D. (1885) enters this under the headword bajri and gives the pronunciation as (bā·dʒri) /ˈbɑːdʒriː/.
