A member of a U.S. political party, broadly conservative in character, which opposed the Democrat party between 1825 and c1834.The party emerged from the split of the Jeffersonian Republican party in 1825. Following the defeat of their candidate John Quincy Adams in the 1832 campaign, the National Republicans joined with other conservative elements to form the Whig party.
