Origin: A borrowing from Japanese. Etymon: Japanese baka.
Etymology: < Japanese baka originally denoting a simple-minded person (15th cent., also as adjective ‘simple-minded’; 1603 as noun baca in Vocabulario da Lingoa de Iapam), now more generally ‘fool’ (19th cent., also ‘tomfoolery’); further etymology uncertain, perhaps ultimately (via Buddhist uses) < Sanskrit moha bewilderment, folly, (in Buddhist contexts) ignorance.The Japanese word was applied to the aircraft in an English context, originally as a code word in the U.S. military, then more widely as a derogatory nickname used by Allied forces; the Japanese name for the aircraft was ōka , literally ‘cherry blossom’ (compare quot. 1974).

A small attack aircraft or piloted missile, either unpowered or powered by solid-fuel rocket motors and carrying an explosive warhead, used in suicide missions by Japanese forces in the latter part of the Second World War. Usually as modifier, esp. in Baka bomb. Cf. kamikaze n. 2a.
