单词 negator
释义

negatorn.

Brit. /nᵻˈɡeɪtə/, U.S. /nəˈɡeɪdər/
Origin: Probably of multiple origins. Partly a borrowing from Latin. Probably also partly formed within English, by derivation. Etymons: Latin negātor ; negate v., -or suffix.
Etymology: In sense 1 (i) < classical Latin negātor a person who denies (rare in classical Latin; common in post-classical Latin from early 3rd cent. in specific sense ‘apostate’) < negāt- , past participial stem of negāre negate v. + -or -or suffix. In later use probably independently (ii) < negate v. + -or suffix. Compare French négateur (mid 19th cent.; attested earlier in historical use denoting a person who denies the Christian faith in face of persecution (1752)). In specific use of sense 1 after Russian otricatel′ (1676 in Old Russian in relation to the Nikonian reforms; 1872 in the passage translated in quot. 1969 at sense 1 in political sense).
1. A person who denies or rejects something; (Russian History) a person who rejected the Nikonian reforms in the Russian Orthodox Church in the 17th cent. or who engaged in radical action against the Tsarist regime in the 19th cent. Cf. Old Believer n., nihilist n. 2.
