单词 nebuchadnezzar
释义

Nebuchadnezzarn.

Brit. /ˌnɛbjᵿkə(d)ˈnɛzə/, U.S. /ˌnɛb(j)əkə(d)ˈnɛzər/
Forms: also with lower-case initial.
Origin: From a proper name; modelled on a French lexical item. Etymon: proper name Nebuchadnezzar.
Etymology: < the name of Nebuchadnezzar (d. c562 b.c), ruler of the Babylonian empire (604–562 b.c.), after French nabuchodonosor large wine bottle used for champagne (1907). Compare jeroboam n., rehoboam n.The form Nebuchadnezzar (with five syllables), reflecting the vocalization of Hebrew Nĕḇūḵaḏne'ṣṣar in the Masoretic text, first appears in the Geneva Bible of 1587 and is taken up in the King James Bible (1611). In the latter version, and most of those subsequent to it, a form spelt with -r- replacing the second -n- occurs in parts of the Old Testament (certain chapters of Jeremiah and Ezekiel), corresponding to a Hebrew form with -r- in this position; these reflect more accurately the consonantal structure of the original form of the name, Babylonian Nabû-kudurrī-uṣur. Earlier, the name is attested in English contexts from the Old English period onwards in a variety of six-syllabled forms, including (in Old English) Nabochodonosor (the usual form), Nabochodonossor, (in Middle English) Nabugodonosor (the usual form), Nabugodenozar, Nebugodonosor, and (in the 16th cent.) Nabuchodonosor (the usual form in Coverdale and the Great Bible of 1540); these reflect post-classical Latin Nabuchodonosor (Vulgate), based on Hellenistic Greek Ναβουχοδονόσορ (Septuagint).
An extremely large wine bottle, used esp. for champagne and usually equivalent to twenty ordinary bottles or 15–16 litres. Also in figurative context, denoting something of a great size. Cf. jeroboam n., rehoboam n.
