Etymology: < scientific Latin Nemesia, genus name (E. P. Ventenat Jardin de la Malmaison (1803) 41) < Hellenistic Greek νεμέσιον catchfly, Silene (pseudo-Dioscorides; < ancient Greek νέμεσις nemesis n.).

Any plant of the genus Nemesia (family Scrophulariaceae), comprising herbaceous plants and subshrubs, native chiefly to southern Africa, having funnel-shaped flowers with a basal pouch or spur; esp. N. strumosa, N. versicolor, or one of their cultivated varieties, widely grown in a variety of colours as annual bedding plants. Also (in form Nemesia): the genus itself.
