Origin: From a proper name. Etymon: proper name Newfoundland.
Etymology: < Newfoundland, the name of an island, the most easterly part of North America ( < new-found adj. 2 + land n.1).The name is reputed to have been given to the island by 15th-cent. explorers; compare new-found adj. 2 and quots. s.v. In 1949 the island was united with Labrador to form a province of Canada.
