Etymology: Either < niffle v. + -ing suffix2 (although attested earlier than the verb), or independently < nifle n. (compare forms s.v.) + -ing suffix2. Compare trifling adj.
In later use Scottish and English regional. Now rare.
Worthless or insubstantial; trifling.
