Origin: A borrowing from Icelandic. Etymon: Icelandic Niflheimr.
Etymology: < Old Icelandic Niflheimr < nifl- , probably in sense ‘darkness’ (see nebula n.) + heimr world, dwelling (see home n.1).
Scandinavian Mythology.
The region of eternal darkness, mist, and cold inhabited by those who died from old age or illness, and ruled over by the goddess Hel. Also figurative.
