Origin: A borrowing from Latin. Etymon: Latin nigella.
Etymology: < post-classical Latin nigella black cumin (5th cent.), darnel or corncockle (from a1217 in British sources), use as noun of classical Latin nigella , feminine of nigellus blackish < niger black (see niger n.1) + -lus , diminutive suffix (see -ellus suffix). Compare nigel n.
1. Any plant of the genus Nigella (family Ranunculaceae), with finely dissected leaves, showy flowers, and numerous black seeds; esp. (a) black cumin, N. sativa; (b) love-in-a-mist, N. damascena. Also: the seeds of N. sativa, used for flavouring food or (formerly) for medicinal purposes. Also (in form Nigella): the genus itself.Valid publication of the genus name: Linnaeus Species Plantarum (1753) I. 534.
