Origin: A borrowing from German. Etymon: German Nigellin.
Etymology: < German Nigellin (H. Reinsch 1842, in Pharm. Central-Blatt 13 314) < scientific Latin Nigella (see nigella n.) + German -in -ine suffix5. Compare French nigelline (1868 in Littré).
Chemistry. rare.
Originally: a viscous substance obtained from the seeds of black cumin, Nigella sativa. In later use: an alkaloid extracted from this substance which also occurs in other nigellas; 3-methoxy-2-(methylamino) benzoic acid methyl ester, C10H13NO3.
