Etymology: Probably < classical Latin niger black (see niger n.¹), used in scientific Latin as specific epithet of the fungus Aspergillus niger (from which the substance has been extracted) + -an suffix.

An alpha-glucan which occurs in the hyphal walls of various fungi.

1953 S. A. Barker et al. in Jrnl. Chem. Soc. 3087 It is now apparent that the ‘mycodextran’ structure is markedly different from those of dextrans.., so that the term ‘mycodextran’ must inevitably lead to confusion. We suggest that the polysaccharide should now be known as ‘nigeran’.
