单词 | neuroptera |
释义 | Neuropteran. Entomology. With plural agreement. Originally: a large and varied class or order of insects having two pairs of membranous wings with fine veins (now historical); (in later use) an order of insects having biting mouthparts and two pairs of leaf-shaped transparent wings with numerous fine veins, frequently held over the back like a roof when at rest; (also neuroptera) members of this class or order. The earliest quots. represent the use of the term (as by Linnaeus) for a poorly characterized group generally taken to include dragonflies ( Odonata), mayflies ( Ephemeroptera), scorpion flies ( Mecoptera), termites ( Isoptera), caddis flies ( Trichoptera), stoneflies ( Plecoptera), and other small groups, all later removed to separate orders. In recent use it has had both a broad and a narrow interpretation. In the narrower interpretation the order Neuroptera is confined to lacewings, ant lions, and mantis flies (otherwise included in the suborder Planipennia). In the broader interpretation it also includes alderflies and dobsonflies ( Megaloptera) and snakeflies ( Raphidioptera, Raphidioidea, or Raphidiodea). Cf. Megaloptera n.
