Etymology: < neuro- comb. form + -tensin (in angiotensin n., hypertensin n.).
Physiology.
A neuropeptide found in the mammalian brain and gastrointestinal tract, initially identified by vasodilatory activity but later recognized to have a wide variety of physiological effects.

1973 R. Carraway & S. E. Leeman in Jrnl. Biol. Chem. 248 6854/1 The presence of a different peptide was detected that produces a visible vasodilation in the exposed cutaneous regions of anesthetized rats... This report presents a method for obtaining the peptide, which we have named neurotensin.
1976 Nature 12 Aug. 607/2 Neurotensin is a tridecapeptide (pGlu-Leu-Tyr-Glu-Asn-Lys-Pro-Arg-Arg-Pro-Tyr-Ile-Leu-COOH) isolated from bovine hypothalami.
1989 Jrnl. Psychopharmacol. 3 100 High densities of neurotensin receptors are found in the substantia nigra pars compacta and ventral tegmental area.
