Origin: A borrowing from Latin, combined with an English element. Etymons: Latin Neognathae , -ous suffix.
Etymology: < scientific Latin Neognathae, superorder name (W. P. Pycraft 1901, in Jrnl. Linn. Soc. 28 343; < neo- neo- comb. form + ancient Greek γνάθος jaw: see -gnath comb. form) + -ous suffix; so named on the assumption that such a palate is an advanced condition. Compare palaeognathous adj.
Chiefly Palaeontology.
Designating the type of palate and jaw characteristic of nearly all living and some fossil birds (forming the superorder Neognathae), in which, among other features, the vomers are usually small and completely fused. Also: of, relating to, or possessing such a palate.
